Where to start when talking about Bacterial Diseases?

What many people fail to realise is that, when it comes to viewing the bacterial world, it is not a case of "us" and "them", because we are more "them" than "us" (Wilson/McNab/Henderson)
Each human being is an ecosystem comprising of approximately 1,000,000,000,000,000 microbes from more than 1000 different species, of which most are bacteria). We have less mammalian cells than bacteria in our body!

Once we leave the protection of our mother's womb, we are exposed to microbes and begin a life-long association with our normal microflora, which consists of (mainly) bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoans.
But even members of our normal microflora can cause infections, once our immune-system is compromised. Here are some examples:

Urinary tract infection caused by Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Proteus spp.

Infective endocartitis caused by alpha-haemolytic streptococci, Staphylococcus spp.

Periodontal diseases caused by Porphyromonas gingivalis, Bacteroides forsythus, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, spirochaetes

Caries caused by Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus spp., Actinomyces spp.

Aspiration pneumonia caused by Oral anaerobes, Staphylococcus spp.

Pneumonia following viral infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus

Otitis media caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae

Pharyngitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes

Meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae

Burn and wound infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes

Acne caused by Propionibacterium acnes

Toxic shock syndrome Staphylococcus aureus

Boils caused by Staphylococcus aureus

Actinomycosis caused by Actinomyces spp.

Pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile

Gas gangrene caused by Clostridium perfringens

Infections associated with prosthetic devices caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus

Salmonella
